This exhibition commemorates the poetics of the French playwright Antonin Artaud, his legendary 1936 journey to Mexico, and the influence of his artistic, literary, and personal legacy throughout the Americas In addition to presenting historical and archival materials, the exhibition will bring together works by artists who, over the past five decades, have responded to Artaud's work and celebrated his enigmatic experience of Mexico and, in particular, the Tarahumara culture Beyond the specifically chronological focus that its title might suggest, Artaud 1936 follows precisely the opposite impulse: to break with the historical boundaries of Artaud's journey through Mexico in order to account for the timelessness of his experience and place it on a plane of continuity with the work of many artists who subsequently reinterpreted it
